When is FD60 needed instead of FD30?
A door should generally match the fire resistance of the wall it sits in. Where a wall is a 60-minute compartment wall, the door in it is usually FD60 or better. Typical locations include:
- Doors in compartment walls between different uses or occupancies
- Firefighting shafts and stair cores in taller buildings
- Boiler, generator and switch rooms
- Stores holding higher fire-load materials
How is an FD60 door different?
FD60 timber leaves are normally 54mm thick with a denser core, wider intumescent seals and four hinges. Frames are heavier, and the gap between frame and wall must be sealed with materials named in the evidence. BS 8214:2026 — the new code of practice for fire-resisting and smoke control doors published in March 2026 — gives fuller guidance on frame-to-structure sealing than the 2016 edition it replaced.
Steel FD60 doorsets are common in plant areas where impact resistance and security also matter. See steel fire doors.

FD60 fire doors questions
How thick is an FD60 door?
Typically 54mm for timber doorsets. Steel FD60 doors vary by manufacturer.
Can I use an FD60 door where FD30 is required?
Yes — a higher rating meets a lower requirement — but it is heavier and dearer, so we only recommend it where the location calls for it or you want a margin.
Is there an FD60S?
Yes. FD60S doorsets have tested smoke seals as well as 60 minutes of fire resistance.
Do FD60 doors need different closers?
Often a stronger closer, sized to the heavier leaf, still keeping opening forces within Approved Document M limits where accessibility applies.
