Getting pairs to close in the right order
Where the leaves overlap at the meeting stiles, the inactive leaf has to close first. A door selector (coordinator) to BS EN 1158 controls the closing sequence. Without one — or with one badly adjusted — pairs are one of the commonest reasons fire doors fail to close properly.
Leaf-and-a-half for wide access
In healthcare, care homes and schools, unequal pairs keep a manageable everyday leaf while allowing full width when needed. We size leaves so the main leaf still gives the clear width your access requirements call for.
Flush bolts and escape routes
Flush bolts on the second leaf suit cupboards and plant rooms, but should not hold leaves on an escape route unless they release with the escape hardware. We specify the right arrangement for each location.

Double fire doors questions
Why does my double fire door not close properly?
Usually the door selector is missing or out of adjustment, or the leaves have dropped. Pairs need the inactive leaf to close first.
What is a leaf-and-a-half door?
A pair with one wide and one narrow leaf, giving normal access through the wide leaf and full width when both open.
Can double fire doors be held open?
Yes, with alarm-linked hold-open devices on each leaf.
Do pairs cost much more than singles?
Roughly 1.7 to 2 times a single doorset, depending on hardware.
