What does FD30 actually mean?
FD30 is the British Standard shorthand for a door assembly that kept its integrity for 30 minutes in a furnace test to BS 476-22. The European equivalent is a classification under BS EN 13501-2, written as E30 (integrity) or EI30 (integrity and insulation), from testing to BS EN 1634-1.
Approved Document B is removing the BS 476 fire resistance parts on 2 September 2029, so new specifications are moving to EN classifications. A door tested to either route is still an FD30 door in everyday language — what matters is that the evidence covers the exact size, glazing and ironmongery you are buying.
Where are FD30 doors required?
Your fire strategy or fire risk assessment sets the rating, but FD30 is the usual minimum for:
- Doors onto protected corridors and lobbies in offices, shops and hotels
- Bedroom and kitchen doors in many HMOs
- Doors within protected stair enclosures in flats
- Plant rooms, stores and cupboards that open onto an escape route
Where the door also has to stop cold smoke — flat entrances and many corridor doors — you need FD30S, which adds tested smoke seals.
Why buy a complete doorset rather than a door leaf?
Certification attaches to the tested doorset — leaf, frame, intumescent seals, hinges, closer and locking — not to a bare leaf. A certified leaf hung in an old frame with mismatched hardware has no evidence behind it. We quote FD30 as a complete doorset and put the manufacturer's certificate reference on your quote, so you know exactly what you are getting before anything is ordered.
What does an FD30 doorset cost?
Most single FD30 doorsets fall between £750 and £1,150 supplied and fitted, ex VAT. Paint-grade flush doors with standard ironmongery sit at the lower end; veneered leaves, large vision panels, non-standard sizes and access control push the price up. Your survey quote is fixed and itemised.
Where are FD30 fire doors used?
- Offices and retail back-of-house
- HMO bedrooms and kitchens
- Hotel corridors

FD30 fire doors questions
Is FD30 the same as E30?
Broadly, yes. FD30 comes from the British test (BS 476-22); E30 is the European classification from BS EN 1634-1. Both mean 30 minutes of integrity. EI30 adds insulation, which some locations and glazed doors need.
Does an FD30 door need a self-closer?
Almost always. Fire doors only work closed, so they need a self-closing device unless they are cupboard or riser doors kept locked shut.
Can I fit an FD30 door into my existing frame?
Only if the manufacturer's evidence allows that frame, which is rare. We normally supply the complete doorset with a new frame so the certification carries through to the finished job.
How thick is an FD30 door?
Most FD30 timber leaves are 44mm thick. FD60 leaves are typically 54mm.
