Why risers are a weak spot
Service risers run through every floor. If a riser door is missing, damaged or left unlocked, fire and smoke can bypass the compartmentation the rest of the building relies on. Riser doors are among the most commonly failed items in fire door surveys.
Locked shut, not self-closing
Cupboard and riser doors that are kept locked don't usually need a self-closer, but they do need a lock tested with the door and a 'Fire door keep locked' sign. Fire-stopping of the shaft itself is a separate trade — we flag what we see during the survey.
Pairs and wide risers
Wide risers often need pairs of doors with tested flush bolts on the inactive leaf. We measure each opening and propose single or double doorsets to suit.

Riser cupboard fire doors questions
Do riser doors need closers?
Not if they are kept locked shut and signed 'Fire door keep locked'.
What rating does a riser door need?
In England, Approved Document B generally asks for at least half the fire resistance of the shaft wall, with a 30-minute minimum — so FD30 is typical, rising to FD60 for 120-minute shafts. Your fire strategy confirms it.
Can riser doors be flush to the wall?
Yes, flush doorsets that match the corridor finish are common.
Do you fire-stop the riser itself?
Fire-stopping is specialist work outside our doorset scope, but we report gaps we see so you can get them addressed.
