Closers that close — every time
A fire door only works shut. Overhead closers to BS EN 1154 must be powerful enough to close and latch the door from any angle, yet light enough to meet Approved Document M opening limits (no more than 30N at the leading edge from 0° to 30°, and 22.5N from 30° to 60°). We size and adjust closers to each door.
Hold-open and free-swing devices
Alarm-linked electromagnetic hold-opens (BS EN 1155) and free-swing closers let busy doors stay open and close automatically on alarm. They need a connection to your fire alarm system by a competent alarm installer.
Replacement hardware on existing doors
Where an existing certified doorset has a broken closer, missing hinge screws or damaged seals, replacing the hardware with items covered by its evidence may be all it needs. Where the door's provenance is unknown, we'll advise whether a new doorset is the better option.
Where are fire door closers and ironmongery used?
- Failed closers and hinges
- Busy corridors needing hold-open
- Seal and signage replacement
- Access control preparation
Fire door closers and ironmongery questions
What closer strength does a fire door need?
Enough to close and latch the door reliably — often EN3 or EN4 for standard leaves — while keeping opening force within accessibility limits.
How many hinges does a fire door need?
Most timber fire doors need three hinges; heavier FD60 leaves often need four. The evidence decides.
Can I use any hinge on a fire door?
No. Hinges should be CE/UKCA marked to BS EN 1935 and suitable for the door's weight and rating.
Do you install hold-open devices?
We fit the devices; connection to the fire alarm panel is done by your alarm engineer, whom we coordinate with.
