Timber Fire Doorsets

Timber fire doorsets are the most widely used fire doors in the UK. They combine a fire-resisting core with hardwood lippings, a matching frame and tested seals, and they can be finished in paint, laminate or real-wood veneer — so the same certified door works in a block of flats, an office or a boutique hotel.

Guide price £750–£1,600 per single doorset, supplied & fitted, ex VAT. Fixed after survey.

How a timber fire door is built

Under the face is a core — often particleboard, solid timber or a mineral composite — with hardwood lippings on the edges. The frame carries intumescent seals that swell in heat to close the gap. Hinges, locks and closers are fitted to positions the test evidence allows, often with intumescent pads behind them.

Finishes that last

Factory-finished veneers and laminates resist knocks better than site painting and keep the gaps consistent. If you want site painting, the paint system usually doesn't affect the fire rating, but painting over seals does — we leave seals clean and tell you how to maintain them.

Standard or made to measure?

Standard sizes are quickest, but older buildings rarely have standard openings. Made-to-measure doorsets are manufactured to the surveyed opening so the gaps and frame fixings fall within the evidence, without trimming a leaf on site.

Where are timber fire doors used?

Timber fire doors questions

Can a timber fire door be trimmed on site?

Only within the limits the manufacturer's evidence allows, usually a few millimetres. We prefer made-to-measure doorsets so no trimming is needed.

Can I paint a timber fire door?

Yes — but never paint over intumescent or smoke seals.

Are timber doors as good as steel?

For FD30 and FD60 in most buildings, yes. Steel suits plant areas, high security and longer ratings.

Which veneers are available?

Oak, ash, walnut, sapele and many others, crown or quarter cut.
