Acoustic Fire Doors

Acoustic fire doors are fire-rated doorsets that also reduce sound passing through them, using denser cores and acoustic seals around the frame and at the threshold. They suit meeting rooms, consulting rooms, studios and flat entrances onto noisy corridors — as long as fire and acoustic performance were tested in the same configuration.

How acoustic ratings work

Acoustic doors are rated with an Rw value in decibels — the higher the number, the more sound is stopped. A standard fire door might achieve around 25 to 29dB; dedicated acoustic doorsets reach 35 to 45dB. The seals do most of the work: any gap lets sound through.

Seals that work for fire and sound

Acoustic seals and drop-down threshold seals must be compatible with the fire door's evidence. We specify doorsets where both performances are documented, so you don't trade one for the other.

Where are acoustic fire doors used?

  • Meeting and interview rooms
  • Medical consulting rooms

Acoustic fire doors questions

What Rw rating do I need?

Offices typically use 30–35dB for meeting rooms; confidential rooms and studios may need 40dB or more.

Do acoustic seals affect the fire rating?

They can if untested. We only use seals covered by the doorset's fire evidence.

Are acoustic fire doors heavier?

Yes, usually, so they may need stronger closers and hinges.

Can existing doors be made acoustic?

Seals can help a little, but significant improvement normally needs an acoustic doorset.
