Integrity-only or insulating glass?
Integrity-only (E) glass stops flames and smoke but lets heat radiate through. Insulating (EI) glass also limits heat transfer, so people can pass close to it. Approved Document B limits uninsulated glazing on some escape routes, so the door's location often decides the glass.
Why you can't just add glass
Cutting a vision panel into an existing fire door — or swapping the glass for ordinary safety glass — breaks the tested assembly. Glazed fire doors should arrive with the glass fitted using the tested system, or be glazed on site by a competent installer using the specified beads and seals.
Light, visibility and safety
Vision panels let people see who is on the other side, bring light into corridors and support safeguarding in schools and care settings. We specify panel position and size so the doorset meets Approved Document M as well as fire requirements.

Glazed fire doors questions
Can a fire door have a lot of glass?
Yes, within the glazed area the doorset was tested with. Fully glazed fire doors exist but cost more.
Is wired glass still used?
Rarely now. Modern clear fire-resistant glass gives much better visibility.
Can I replace broken fire glass myself?
It must be replaced with the same glass type and glazing system. We can supply and fit replacement glazing for doorsets we install.
Does fire glass need to be safety glass too?
In low-level and door glazing, yes — many fire glasses also meet impact safety classes.
