Fire-Rated Screens & Fanlights

Fire-rated screens and fanlights are the glazed panels beside and above fire doors. Because they form part of the same fire-resisting wall, they need the same rating as the door, and the door, frame and screen should be tested or assessed together as one assembly.

Guide price £1,400–£4,500 per screen, supplied & fitted, ex VAT. Fixed after survey.

Doors with glazed surrounds

Older buildings often have doors with fanlights or side panels glazed in ordinary glass — a common failure in fire risk assessments. Replacing just the door leaves the opening unprotected. We quote the full door and screen assembly so the whole opening is rated.

Light without losing protection

Fire-rated screens bring daylight into corridors and receptions. Where escape routes pass alongside the glazing, insulating glass may be needed — we check the location against the fire strategy.

Where are fire rated glazed screens used?

  • Reception and lobby screens
  • Corridor borrowed lights
  • Doors with fanlights
  • Stair enclosure screens

Fire rated glazed screens questions

Does a fanlight above a fire door need to be fire-rated?

Yes, if it is part of the fire-resisting wall or door assembly. Ordinary glass above a fire door defeats the door.

Can screens be added to an existing fire door?

Only as part of a tested or assessed assembly. Usually the door and screen are replaced together.

Can screens be very large?

Size limits depend on the screen system's evidence. Larger screens may need intermediate mullions or transoms.

Steel or timber screens?

Both are available. Timber matches timber doorsets; steel suits slim sightlines and higher ratings.
