Panic or emergency exit hardware?
BS EN 1125 panic hardware — the full-width push bar — is for doors used by people who don't know the building, such as shops, venues and offices open to visitors. BS EN 179 emergency exit devices suit staff-only areas where people are trained. Your fire risk assessment or fire strategy says which applies.
Secure without slowing escape
Exit doors are a common target for break-ins. Steel exit doors with multi-point panic hardware, anti-tamper outside faces and alarmed or monitored exits keep the building secure without delaying escape.
Does an exit door need a fire rating?
Many final exit doors are not fire-rated. A rating is needed where the door sits in a fire-resisting external wall or where an escape route passes it outside. We confirm this at survey.
Where are fire exit doors used?
- Shops and showrooms
- Warehouses and factories
- Offices and venues
- Schools and community buildings
Fire exit doors questions
Can a fire exit door be locked?
Not in a way that prevents instant exit without a key while the building is occupied. Panic and emergency exit hardware achieves security and escape together.
Do fire exit doors need to be fire doors?
Not always. It depends on the wall they sit in and nearby escape routes.
Which way does a fire exit door open?
Outward, in the direction of escape, where occupancy requires it — most commercial exit doors open outward.
Can you add outside access?
Yes, with outside access devices that are compatible with the exit hardware.
