What is changing and when?
The reaction-to-fire parts of BS 476 left Approved Document B on 2 March 2025. The fire resistance parts, including those used for doors, follow on 2 September 2029. Their European replacements are BS EN 1634-1 for fire resistance and BS EN 1634-3 for smoke.
Do I need to replace my FD30 doors?
No. The change affects how new building work is specified. Existing doors are judged under your fire risk assessment on whether they are in good condition and fitted correctly.
What should I ask for now?
If you're specifying doors for a project finishing near or after 2029, ask for doorsets with EN classifications or dual evidence. We confirm the evidence route on every quote.
Common questions
Will FD ratings disappear?
The term will stay in everyday use for years, but new specifications will increasingly use E and EI classes.
Does this apply in Scotland and Northern Ireland?
The 2029 change is to England's Approved Document B. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own guidance.
